Looking back to when my son was diagnosed at barely two years old with epilepsy, cerebral palsy, global delays, and mental retardation to thinking about where he is today—a young adult in his early 20s who is a Bollywood buff and has a more active social life than I do, I cannot help but be grateful to the therapists and professionals who worked with Yuvraj in the United States of America (US) and guided us as a family.

When Yuvraj began receiving therapies in the US, I was like a sponge. I would listen and observe in every session and follow the home programmes suggested by the therapists. Over time, my own intuition helped me see what was and was not working for my son. I learnt that less is more—the focus should be on quality services.

Today, I know that good quality services coupled with the right intervention plan can really make a lasting difference. As I drove Yuvraj from session to session, I learned the value of having all the therapists collaborate and communicate with each other to help Yuvraj practise and begin to generalise the skills that they were helping him build. Yuvraj’s army of therapists empowered him and us to take on the many challenges that came, and will continue to come, our way.

We established The Gateway Intervention Centre after having worked with children with needs for many years at The Gateway School of Mumbai. At Gateway Mumbai, teaching begins with observation. The focus is always on a child’s strengths, and individualised educational plans are created based on observational data to ensure that each child gets optimal support to reach their goals. We have seen the importance of working in collaboration with families to create individualised learning programmes for each child. Through the centre, we aim to put our years of learning into action and provide individualised and curated support to each person to help them reach their goals.
